Goodbye Sequoia, hello e-tron! The range seems to be just shy of 250mi per charge, significantly higher than Audi’s advertised 200. All the Audi insiders we’ve talked to have admitted that Audi deliberately underreports the range so they can’t possibly have another Dieselgate scandal (and E-Golf owners similarly report better than advertised range).

Interestingly, Audi only lets the car charge to 80%, which apparently prevents battery degradation.  So no need to drain it down before recharging like a cellphone.

Kinja'd!!!

Now to see if Connecticut is smart enough to realize that it’s an electric car and thus doesn’t require an annual emissions test.

yep.  charging LiIon cells to 100% repeatedly will eventually cause lithium plating, leading to a gradual loss in capacity.  hybrids do this as well; won’t charge past 80% nor discharge past 25%.

I’d be interested to know what the range will be in mid February, when temps are well below freezing.

Same. Will be interesting to see which uses more energy:  AC or heater?

I would hope that EPA stated range would consider in a portion of driving in temps below freezing. Similar to city and highway but hot and cold.

Interesting. Won’t discharge past 25%? So, theoretically , could a car’s battery have a quarter charge left but it will show as “empty” and potentially leave a driver stranded?

It actually arrived at the port in Boston back in June, but it was confiscated because of that whole fiery death battery recall. We got our “your car is ready” email 2 weeks ago.

hahaha. No. The EPA rating basically assumes STP (standard temperature and pressure, 20°C ( 68°F) and one atmosphere) . Elevation and temperature can both cause deviation from the ratings.

At first, when I saw the pic  I thought it was an electric Kona, they look so much alike... I guess the eTron is a bit larger, though less range and more expensive... oh, yeah and no AWD available on the Kona electric.

I read an article about the new e-tron gt and they said someone pulled up Next to them in a Tesla just to tell them their Tesla was better. Because of course

I meant hybrids specifically. they just kick on the ICE once the traction battery state of charge gets that low. I’m not sure how BEVs handle it. I know you can safely  discharge LiIon cells lower than 25%, but you never ever want to run them flat.

No surprise there. I’m genuinely looking forward to more big OEM EVs to come out so Tesla fans can shut the hell up (not that they will lol).

The Heater will easily take up more range than the AC. That said, I would be sure to test with preheating the car. One of the tricks not talked about much when using an EV in cold weather is preheating the car while its on the grid.

Changing temperature is more energy intensive than maintaining temperature.

The EPA does do some testing to include winter. The problem is said testing is done at 56mph top speed and 21 mph average speed.

https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/fe_test_schedules.shtml#detailed-comparison

The other thing to note about EPA testing is that it gets averaged in with the other 4 tests.

Charging to 100% is not the problem, maintaining 100% for a long time is the problem.

Tesla is learning this the hard way. They did an “over the air” update that reduced most older models battery capacity to 80% so they won’t have to replace battery packs  and owners are hella pissed.

Kinja'd!!! TheWay > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com
08/12/2019 at 11:45

Kinja'd!!!2

Well yes. The 0% and 100% you see is not the real numbers. They are virtual numbers. So when you see 100% on an EV, it is usually 80%-93% in reality . The same applies to 0%.

Of course to extend battery life, many manufacturers offer a standard mode and range mode. Which sets you to 80%-90% (or some let you choose) in virtual % to help expand battery lifespan further.

Never intended it to be one brand, however with EVs it generally is. Audi might have some, but I’d guess nowhere near the level of Tesla douchebaggery and fanboi-ism

Not that dissimilar from your car showing you’re on empty when you still have a gallon or two left, but a gasoline cat will let you keep going on “fumes” and run it dry. Will an EV cut your off at some point, even if you actually have some range left, in the interest of saving your battery?

In 99% percent of cases, that’s perfectly fine, but what about those 1% of cases where no being able to go 5 more miles becomes a life-threatening situation?

My brother just ordered a model 3, I’m interested to see it. I don’t foresee him being a typical Tesla owner as we kids (except he’s 37 now) are all pretty come from not a lot, humble people. If he is I plan to call him out, lol. I’ll wait until the a4 sized e tron GT comes, I love the s5 sportback  and I’d imagine it will be similar to that the way the etron gt looks, just a bit smaller.

It depends on the car, some EVs let you drive a few miles past 0%. I know Tesla has said theirs have 5 - 15 miles left after 0. Though you shouldn’t really risk it (not because its bad for the battery, but simply because being towed isn’t fun )

I do think there are a fair amount of Tesla owners that are just normal people who don’t think their vehicle was built by God, however the super fans are heard loudest. We had one on our detailing page last night that started an FAQ (no problem there, good to learn from owners) but then got upset when people say they like ICE motor noise, manuals, etc. Gets annoying.

Agree on the E-Tron GT, hopefully will be like a more budget friendly Taycan.

I’M SO JEALOUS!

I went and played with on for an hour while I charged my e-Golf on the dealer’s fast charger. If I made stupid amounts of money I’d get one in a second, I don’t care that it’s an SUV. Especially since it doesn’t feel like an SUV. Driving it feels a lot like my Golf except I’m a tad bit higher.

And the new infotainment and center stack is PHENOMENAL! I love everything about that car.
